East of Eden

Mon Nov 7, 2005, 7:39 AM
ok, so my band's demo is now available online, if you like black metal, or just want to be super cool, you'll buy it. [link] we also have a sweet beer stein for sale, and a basic bumper sticker. i did all the artwork on the cd, as well as bass and vocals, so you know it's kickass.

here's what someone from the metal archives said of our debut EP:
Normally, one wouldn’t think of respectable metal coming out of America. Well here’s Todesfaust with their new EP, East of Eden, finally released after two years of work. And the work paid off. The artwork alone is perfect for the music (actually done by the vocalist, Murezor). For those who are wondering, yes, this is black metal – however it has not conformed to be “kvlt”, and once you listen, you will know that is what actually makes this album true. The overall sound quality is excellent for a demo. The bass drum could be a bit clearer though because sometimes it just sounds like rumbling in the background, not that there’s anything wrong with that. East of Eden is a nice keyboard track – just make sure your speakers can handle the bass. I’m not going to go into much detail about the rest of the album but here’s an overview for tracks 2,5, and 6. They are all very different from one another in terms of arrangement however, there is a musical theme here. Extremely symphonic indeed – Strings, horns, piano, choir - etc. Along with epic synth riffs and creative guitar work. The vocals are pure black metal and are a nice contrast to the rest of the album. Give this album a couple listens because there are a lot of subtle things happening. The drummer is very creative and it’s nice to not just hear blast beats all the time – in fact there are hardly any. Split time signatures can be found here and there. In track 5, Relinquishment of My Former God, Roanoz’s clean vocals come in very strangely and it doesn’t really sound great (probably the only true down-point of the album), but then he brings them back to par with the rest of the music and it sounds fine. A fine job by Roanoz is also done on the last track. Now to the somewhat obscure tracks on the album: Track 3, Tales of the Old Kingdom, actually sounds like powermetal for the first minute or so (think skymning/borknagar) but then readjusts and the drums once again go into a subtle creative pattern. Track 4, Dark Rites of the Mystic Order, is an instrumental. The music is still in the same key as the rest of the album but the atmosphere is completely changed. The bass is the main instrument and only one guitar which is barely heard plays as an accompaniment. Overall, we have an outstanding EP. Definitely worth picking up for these summarized reasons: mature music theory, singing which keeps the album true, creative drumming, and symphonic madness. In my opinion, there is no band that Todesfaust is comparable to because their sound is so unique as opposed to other artists. You will probably like this band if you like Emperor, Tvangeste, Bombensturm, Dark Fortress, Falkenbach, Summoning, and other keyboard driven black metal.

Shipley Show last night

Sat Oct 29, 2005, 9:10 AM
last night was the shipley school talent show. it was gearing up to be the perfect storm of a terrible gig... 10 minute time limit, terrible acts, going on third (after a stand up routine and a rousing rendition of "man of constant sorrow" from o brother where art thou), the fact that the hardest thing anybody there listened to was cream, a terrible engineer who kept changing the levels on my mic, and that only about 50 people showed up. but we pulled it off, got the show recorded in terrible quality on brian's mp3 player, and the two (yes, two) songs we played are up on [link] for anyone who wants to listen to them. anyways, we were supposed to play a show last week at dave's house, but that got postponed for the best possible reason: too many people wanted to come. it was supposed to be todesfaust, blood scarab, subpoena, and ctk. the show was supposed to be in dave's basement, which can hold only 30 people. with 16 people in bands, and about 35-50 other people who wanted to come, you do the math. but dave's the man (or rather, his dad is) because he said "no problem, well just play outside." well that was perfect until on the day of the show, it decided to rain like a motherfucker. well, dave's lookin for a venue for us to play in now, but that's gonna take a while to get nailed down. so now we play the waiting game. also, that was going to be todesfaust's first truely metal show, with metal bands and metal fans, so we were totally pysched about playing, so the cancellation came as a real bummer. well whenever we do have the show, we'll be sure to record it on brian's mp3 player again, for more shitty "bootlegs," and maybe we'll even get someone to videotape it, and i can start turning out some dvds or post videos online.

in slightly related news, a friend of daves i met at their fennario show has offered todesfaust free studio time in exchange for a cut of the profits of what we make on what we record. this is an amazing coincidence and opprotuniy, because it just so happens that we were begining to put money together to go into the studio to record our first full length to be released in june, label or no label. well either way, we're going to release this full length in june of 2006, even if we have to use an antique phonograph (actually that would be really cool), so be ready in the summer for Feast Upon Golgotha to hit shelves (if we're lucky) or just some internet stores near you. murezor out

Quite the week

Sat Sep 10, 2005, 7:15 PM
wow, it really has been quite a week. quite a summer, at that. so it started out with me getting into a very serious car accident. i could have died, but i didnt. (i got to ride in the helicopter to the hospital!) the i left for london in late july, just after turning 17. i lived there for a month in a flat with my friend paul, literally IN covent garden. i attended film school there and had a blast makin' movies. i was supposed to meet up with gaahl from gorgoroth, then go to their concert, but they backed out, and changed the show dates. then mystic circle had a concert the sunday before i was supposed to leave. but before i had a chance to go, paul's mom changed the tickets on us. it was quite the bummer. so i get home, and immedietly go on a camping trip thing with my dad, which was cool, but the coolest was i got a military ID! since he's in the sir force reserve, i can now get onto any military base in the world. so i get back from that trip and start my senior yearl the next tuesday. i had set up an Independent Study Project (ISP) in filmmaking with my school, and low and behole, i go into the art cave (where all the computers are for digital art class) and they have a brand spanking new G4 with final cut pro and everything on it. (they forgot to get a camera, but what do you expect, it's CHA/SS!) so tonight i just got back from a sweet concert that a ton of my friends bands played in, namely Dave & Imperium, a badass group that sounds like nile, and Anthony & the rest of Subpoena, a sweet thrashy metal band from my area. check them out if you get the chance (myspace.com/subpoena). i got to see some people i hadnt seen in a couple of years, and had a lot of fun spending time with them again. and to top it all off, Todesfaust was just invited to play a Halloween house party at Daves house, with Da Nest, Subpoena, and Imperium, which was when East of Eden (our demo) was going to be released anyway, so it's sort of like a demo release party for us. for right now, this is quite the life.

my birthday

Fri Jul 22, 2005, 1:33 PM
ok, so today is my birthday, i am finally done working with retarded eight year olds for the summer, i'm five days away from spending a month in London, and i just bought myself five cds to celebrate. what did i get you ask?

Bombensturm - Machtwerk
Dark Fortress - Tales of Eternal Dusk
Dies Ater - Through Weird Woods
Dodheimsgard - Kronet Til Konge
Skymning - Stormchoirs

overall, i think i like dodheimsgard the most, but i've only been listening to them for about a hour or so, so it's not yet a fair judgement. on a side note, Todesfaust was thanked in the Machtwerk booklet for support and friendship, so i would like to return the favor for Sturm and Bomber and say thank you guys, you've been a great inspiration since we discovered you. wotan mit uns, murezor.

this past saturday

Wed Jul 6, 2005, 2:27 PM
ok, so as it turns out (i truley dont remember) i got into a fairly serious car accident last saturday. i might have been driving a little too fast, or not fast enough, but anyway, i spun out, and hit a tree and telephone pole (if i had hit only one im would have died). i broke my leg, got a concusion, and brusies and cuts all up and down my body. my friend got a worse leg break, and bruises too. i woke up tuesday in the hospital, and was very confused. i'll post with updates as i get them, murezor
